Giving Back at Brooklyn Heights Community Garden

Nov 8, 2021

What a tiring, rewarding, FUN Friday! BELL team members partnered with Rebuilding Together Nashville to support Ms. Pearl Frierson and the Brooklyn Heights Community Garden in North Nashville.

BHCG is a .56 acre urban farm located on formerly vacant lots in a historically Black and low-income neighborhood that experiences food apartheid, as there are no grocery stores within a mile from the garden. Many of the residents in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood are elderly and on fixed incomes, so this garden, which has been a passion of Ms. Frierson for over a decade, is a community blessing. It has now grown into its own 501(c)(3) organization with plans to become a full-scale urban farm with a performance stage and gathering spaces, green house, hoop house, a pack-and-wash station, and a community center.

RTN is currently working with Dryden Architecture and Design and Nashville Foodscapes to design and build the structural improvements that will bring this plan to fruition. BELL helped with heavy landscaping, moving old garden beds to make space for these structural additions and preparation for the Winter to help increase their yield next Spring.
